What the phub!?

For this module, we had to design a trans medial experience to encourage behavioural change.

The behaviour we wanted to address was the phenomenon of phubbing: using your phone during social contact. We chose this because excessive phone use is a common problem nowadays, and we want to reduce it during moments when being present is especially important.

Context

Our intervention is a cage for your phone, where everyone receives their own key. The cage is placed on a table at a café terrace. By simulating notifications, we challenge users to leave their phones untouched.

At the end of the intervention, each participant receives a cat-shaped keychain as a conversation starter, so the message can continue to spread afterwards.

Concept

Our intervention is aimed at young people, especially those who spend a lot of time online. We chose a fresh colour palette because it conveys friendliness and calm, qualities we want to encourage through this design.

For the mascot and logo, we chose a cat, as cats and cat videos are a cornerstone of internet culture.

Our posters have a cheeky, humorous edge, inspired by memes, to catch the attention of our target audience.

On our website, users can find more information about phubbing, view the posters again, and see how long others managed to avoid phubbing

Visual Design

Within the project group, I took on the role of art director. The biggest challenge was getting the other group members to work in a structured way and to produce a strong result within the given timeframe.
